“When I say I need you, I am not talking about dependency. I am talking about interdependence.”


When I tell you I need you,

I don’t mean I’m incomplete without you.

I mean I understand something about life.

I need you the way a cake needs every ingredient.

Not because flour isn’t flour by itself.

Not because sugar isn’t sweet by itself.

But because together, they become something neither could become alone.

I remember hearing,

“I love you like a fat kid loves cake.”

And maybe that’s deeper than we give it credit for.

Because the point isn’t eating the cake and then no longer needing it.

The point is understanding that every ingredient mattered.

Remove one thing,

and it might still look like cake,

but something is missing.

A counterfeit version of what it could have been.

I need you like the earth needs rain.

Not because the earth stops being the earth without it.

But because there are seeds waiting on something greater than themselves.

Without rain, there is drought.

Without connection, there are gifts, ideas, and futures that never get watered.

I need you like the solar system needs every planet.

Like music needs harmony.

Like a fingerprint needs every line that makes it unique.

I think that’s what we’ve forgotten.

We’ve confused needing each other with losing ourselves.

But when I say I need you,

I’m not asking you to become less so I can become more.

I’m saying your uniqueness matters.

Your perspective matters.

Your lived experience matters.

Your voice matters.

Like those Transformers we watched growing up—

every one of them was fully equipped on its own.

Each had a purpose.

Each had strengths.

Each could move independently.

But together?

Together they became something greater than the sum of their parts.

Not because they lost themselves.

Because they brought themselves.

Maybe that’s what community is.

Maybe that’s what justice is.

Maybe that’s what healing is.

Not becoming the same.

Not agreeing on everything.

Not watering ourselves down.

But bringing our whole selves to the table.

Like two people putting their foot in a pot of greens.

Both dishes can be amazing.

Both can carry a unique flavor.

Both can leave a signature behind.

And that’s why when I say I need you,

I don’t mean I lack me.

I mean I honor the part of life that only you can bring.

A better you doesn’t take away from me.

A better you creates a better we.

And maybe that’s been the dream all along.

I especially love ending with:
